Work in Progress - Sapphire Pendant

Have you ever wondered about the intricate process of faceting a raw gemstone by hand? Join me on a journey as we delve into the art of creating a breathtaking sapphire pendant, featuring the mesmerizing beauty of bismuth. This sketch was made based the first gem I acquired, an emerald. I have acquired a number of raw gem stones including emerald, ruby, blue sapphire, and a purple tanzanite. These gems will be further offset by bismuth crystals.

Understanding the Art of Faceting

Faceting a gemstone is a meticulous process that involves cutting and polishing the raw material to enhance its brilliance and sparkle. Each facet is carefully calculated and precisely cut to maximize the gem's beauty and value. In the case of a sapphire pendant, the goal is to create a stunning piece of jewelry that will captivate the beholder.

The Beauty of Sapphire

Sapphire is a precious gemstone known for its rich blue hue, but it can also come in a variety of colors such as pink, yellow, and green. The durability and brilliance of sapphire make it a popular choice for jewelry, especially in engagement rings and pendants. When faceted correctly, sapphire can exhibit a dazzling play of light and color that is truly mesmerizing. This project will use the lower, longer of the two emeralds. The yellow stone was a bonus provided by the generous seller. As a bonus, here is my dog, Connie's, bed and pillow!

The Intriguing Element of Bismuth

Adding a touch of bismuth to the sapphire pendant brings a unique and captivating element to the design. Bismuth is a brittle metal with a silvery-white hue that forms colorful oxide layers when heated. Its iridescent properties make it a popular choice for jewelry making, adding a modern and artistic flair to traditional designs.

The Handcrafted Process

Faceting a raw gemstone by hand requires skill, precision, and patience. The artisan carefully examines the raw sapphire, determining the best angles and facets to enhance its natural beauty. Each cut is made with precision tools and a keen eye, ensuring that the final piece will shine with brilliance. With this project, I am cutting the facets manually due to access to equipment. In parallel, I am joining the local Old Pueblo Lapidary Society which has more specialized equipment, where I'll be able to make more uniform facets. The diamond shape of the apex facets rather than the conventional triangle was a mistake, but one that I have ended up liking and leaning into with this project.

Whats Next

Once the sapphire has been meticulously faceted and polished, it is ready to be set into a stunning pendant design. The bismuth element adds a contemporary twist to the traditional setting, creating a piece of jewelry that is both timeless and unique. The final touches, such as the chain and clasp, are chosen to complement the beauty of the sapphire and bismuth, completing the masterpiece.

As the work in progress continues, the sapphire pendant begins to take shape, each facet and angle reflecting the dedication and artistry of the craftsman. Stay tuned for the final reveal of this exquisite piece, a testament to the beauty of handcrafted jewelry and the art of faceting raw gemstones.

Comment if you think I should use copper or brass as the metal tying this pendant together.
